Montel News 06.08.2025    Europe is set for a 10-fold increase in large-scale battery energy storage by 2040,

according to a new Montel Analytics survey based on Entso-E’s 10-year network development plan.

This rapid growth reflects a rising “cry for flexibility” as volatile power markets see increasing price spreads driven by renewable integration and the phase-out of thermal assets.

📉 In Germany, for example, prices ranged from –€0.51 to €247/MWh on a single day in June, highlighting the need for storage to absorb excess renewable energy and shift supply to high-demand hours.

🗣 “It’s hard to overestimate the future value of flexibility,” said Eva Zimmermann of Aurora Energy Research.
“This high spread is a cry for flexibility,” added Christoph Maurer of Consentec GmbH.

📊 Battery storage capacity projections (GWh):

▪️🇩🇪 Germany: 11.3 (2030) → 33.8 (2035) → 50.9 (2040)

▪️🇬🇧 UK: 22.2 (2030) → 30.0 (2040)

▪️🇮🇹 Italy: 25.9 (2030) → 54.6 (2040)

▪️🇵🇱 Poland: 0 today → 17.6 (2040)

▪️🇫🇮 Finland: 2.6 (2030) → 3.3 (2040)

▪️🇪🇸 Spain: Estimate of 392 MW in 2025; long-term potential of 15 GW power capacity by 2040 (storage GWh not specified)
