Periodico de Energia  07.01.2025     Spain has already returned to importing more electricity than it exports to France and has an import balance in 2024.

According to data from Red Eléctrica, the interconnection with France has yielded an import balance of 2,104 GWh. Specifically, it has imported 8,780 GWh while it has exported 6,676, half of what it did two years ago.

The low prices of French nuclear energy this year have made France once again the king of electricity exports in the Old Continent, since its atomic power plants are used by Germany and Italy, for example.
This is not the case in Spain, which does not represent this balance even 1% of the country’s electricity demand.

Third year as a net exporter

Despite once again buying more electricity than it sells to France, Spain remains an electricity exporting country thanks to its excellent renewable production.

The final balance of Spanish international interconnections was importing with 9,633 GWh, of which 8,968 GWh went to the Portuguese electrical system and 2,561 GWh to Morocco. Andorra bought 208 GWh from us.

Three out of every four GWh exchanged in the Iberian connection with the Portuguese neighbour went towards Portugal, so it could be said that more than 15% of the electricity consumed comes from Spain.

Specifically, Spain sends more than 13 TWh to Portugal while it buys 3,787 GWh from the Portuguese last year.

In the case of Morocco, 8.5% of the energy that passes through the interconnection is purchased by Spain, the rest is exported to the Maghreb country.

Taking into account all the energy exchanged at the borders, Spain exports 63% while it imports 37%.
